Bio

Claire Heise works primarily in the medium of oil painting, exploring formal old master techniques together with elements of reduction and abstraction. With a desire to understand the workings of the mind, Claire initially began a career as a Neuroscientist, completing a Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine at the University of Sydney in 2006. A dramatic career change, however, saw her complete a Master of Art at the University of New South Wales (Art and Design) in 2014. Claire’s paintings deal predominately with tensions between ‘the ideal’ and ‘the real’ within the realm of mental health. In 2016 Claire's self portrait "Cockroaches are great" was selected as a finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize.

Claire currently lives and works in Sydney.
